AVL GmbH

Organisation Introduction

AVL List GmbH is a global leader in the development, simulation, and testing of powertrain systems, including fuel cell technologies, for automotive and heavy-duty applications. Headquartered in Austria, AVL combines cutting-edge engineering expertise with advanced digital tools to deliver sustainable mobility solutions. The company operates worldwide, driving innovation in electrification, hydrogen technologies, and renewable fuel systems to enable carbon-neutral transport across sectors.

Why IsoPROPEL?

AVL joined IsoPROPEL to accelerate the transition toward zero-emission waterborne mobility. The project aligns perfectly with AVL’s strategic objectives of advancing fuel cell technologies and integrating renewable energy carriers into real-world propulsion systems. IsoPROPEL offers a unique opportunity to validate direct isopropanol fuel cells (DIFC) and associated logistics concepts, complementing AVL’s commitment to decarbonization and its vision of sustainable transport. By contributing expertise in fuel cell integration and simulation, AVL helps pave the way for scalable solutions that meet EU climate targets and support the Green Deal.

Involvement in IsoPROPEL?

AVL focuses on optimizing the integration of isopropanol with inland shipping fuel cell powertrains and developing advanced simulation models using AVL CRUISE™. Additionally, AVL contributes to designing on-board fuel storage concepts for the IPA/ACE energy carrier and performs techno-economic analyses to benchmark performance against conventional systems.
