Stichting Projecten Binnenvaart / Expertise and Innovation Centre for Inland Barging

Organisation Introduction

The Expertise and Innovation Centre for Inland Barging (EICB) is a programme of legal entity Stichting Projecten Binnenvaart (SPB). It is an independent not-for-profit foundation with the mission to develop and share knowledge about innovations for the inland navigation sector. The focus is on energy transition and reduction of greenhousegas and air pollutant emissions. With broad technical, policy, legal and economic expertise, SPB/EICB supports public and private parties in research, policy development and implementation projects.

Through participation in (inter)national coordination, research, development and innovation projects and the management of subsidy schemes, EICB has up-to-date knowledge of the relevant developments in the sector. EICB organization has a broad and extensive network of experts and stakeholders. One of the assets is the EICB Innovation Lab in which more than 30 partners with different backgrounds, collaboratively work on creating the framework conditions for the breakthrough of the energy transition in inland navigation.

Why IsoPROPEL?

SPB/EICB is partner in IsoPROPEL because of the fit with the mission to support the inland navigation sector to move towards a zero-emission mode of transport. The energy technology being further developed within the IsoPROPEL project is quite promising and could be a game-changer for the sector. SPB/EICB is involved in projects for other technologies and energy solutions as well, such as full battery-electric sailing, application of hydrogen fuel cell solutions and application of methanol as fuel. Therefore, by comparing the IsoPROPEL solution with these other technologies and energy types, SPB/EICB can make sure that IsoPROPEL provides added value and can have a competitive advantage. Moreover, because of the in-depth knowledge of about the inland navigation sector, SPB/EICB can improve the compatibility of IsoPROPEL for inland vessels, also in relation of the technical regulations, economic feasibility, and the energy infrastructure and logistics.
